The Lewer Companies is pleased to announce the promotion of Robert Stompoly to the position of Senior Vice President & General Counsel, effective October 1, 2016. He joined the companies as General Counsel in August 2007 and was promoted to Vice President just over a year ago, on September 1, 2015.
Key to this most recent promotion is the expansion of Stompoly’s responsibilities, which now include managing all legal aspects of the companies, coordinating project management requirements, providing strong leadership of cross-functional teams, overseeing marketing communications, and managing financial objectives.
Prior to joining Lewer nine years ago, Stompoly served as General Counsel and Vice President of Product Development for SellingLTC.com, LLC, a Georgia-based company that supports long-term care insurance sales. Prior to, he spent five years with Transamerica Occidental Life Insurance Company in Kansas City, Missouri, supporting Transamerica’s national worksite long-term care insurance sales efforts in terms of sales and product training, regulatory compliance, product development, marketing materials, and the administration of a class action lawsuit settlement.
Throughout his career, Stompoly served as an insurance industry consultant for various long-term care insurance sales organizations and in the development and promotion of innovative business practices, and as an editor and ghost writer for insurance carriers including Prudential and MetLife. At the time of his hiring at Lewer, he commented that what he enjoyed about his positions in the insurance industry was the variety of responsibilities. “Every day brings something new and challenging,” he said.
Stompoly received a BA in English, with a minor in Administration of Justice from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1990 and received his Juris Doctorate degree from the university’s School of Law in 1993. That year, he founded Stompoly Law Offices in Kansas City, specializing in domestic law, estate planning, municipal law, and personal injury law.

As the grand finale to The Lewer Agency’s 60th anniversary celebration in October, the company was pleased to announce the onboarding of Kiddie Academy, an education-based childcare leader for more than 30 years. Appropriately, the company, headquartered in Abingdon, Maryland, is also a 3-generation family operation. Kiddie Academy supports 160 franchise locations in the United States.
Lewer first learned that Kiddie Academy was looking for benefits and post-Affordable Care Act solutions last spring, according to Lewer Director, Small Business Tom Kohl. “Kevin Shaffer, VP of Finance at Kiddie Academy, reached out through our 7-Eleven portal in May inquiring about benefits for their franchisees,” said Kohl. “I set-up a call later that day with Kevin and Lewer Financial Advisors’ President Greg Addison.
“We had multiple discussions with Kevin and his team at Kiddie Academy’s corporate office in the following days,” Kohl continued. “As part of the discovery process, they facilitated introductions and a presentation to their Franchise Advisory Committee. This presentation and our follow-up conversations produced positive feedback.
“This is a new market and industry for our company and we’re eager to learn more about these franchise owners and how we can help them grow their businesses,” said Kohl. “We are encouraged that this account holds a significant future for us based on the shared principles of our two companies.”

After months of fundraising for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), members of the Lewer U.S. team recently gathered at Cleveland University in Kansas City, Missouri for The Light The Night Walk. The annual event funds life-saving research and support for people battling cancer. Participants carried illuminated lanterns: white for survivors, red in support and gold in memory of a lost loved one.
Many who attended the event paid tribute to survivors and those they’ve lost by visiting The Garden of Memory and Hope. A special memorial ceremony was held just prior to the 7:30 p.m. walk which was led by the division of Hematologic Malignancies and Cellular Therapeutics at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Last spring, and following a series of meetings in Kansas City and London, the LewerMark team announced an agreement with a new carrier, Sirius International Insurance Corporation. Sirius replaced Lewer’s previous carrier (Trustmark) in states outside of Washington, effective June 1, 2016.
Representatives from Underwriter Brit Global Specialty, Andrew Bowers, Divisional Director Accident and Health, and Mike Barry, Head of Claims Short Tail and Energy, along with Anne Davis, Senior Vice President Business Development from Coverholder Global Benefits Group, were recently in Kansas City to meet with Lewer, the Third-Party Administrator, as part of the launching of the new Washington plan.
“The focus of the meeting was the LewerMark inbound student collegiate insurance for the state of Washington,” said Lewer Vice President Robert Stompoly.

Lewer Financial Advisors (LFA) continues to build its relationship with the BP Amoco Association (BPAMA) and the association’s members.
A recent convention sparked interest in LFA’s 401(k) offerings and the submission of an article about 401(k) plans written by LFA Vice President Greg Addison for BPAMA’s newsletter in November.
The effort was followed by a webinar, conducted November 15 by Addison and LFA account manager Jeremy Wassmer. The webinar was attended by CFO, HR, and Controller management members from eight BPAMA member companies, as well as Executive Director Jack Allard and Associate Director, Tara Sutter.
The webinar, according to Addison, focused primarily on understanding and executing the plan sponsor fiduciary responsibilities for 401(k) plans and the importance of benchmarking plans on a periodic basis. In addition to excellent information on this topic, LFA provided interested attendees with a 401(k) Plan Sponsor Preparedness/Audit File Checklist.

In November, Lewer Canada President René Sainte-Marie, Vice President Nik Lewer and Account Manager Beth Loch attended the Sixth Annual Symbility Health Partner Summit in Toronto, Ontario.
“Symbility provides Lewer with our TPA technology for both front-end enrollments and billing, as well as back-end claims payments,” said Lewer. “The front-end solution is new and is called ‘AdminCare.’ It will be a huge upgrade for us effective January 1, 2017 when we retire our legacy system.
“The workshops at the conference were especially informative,” said Lewer. “We covered healthcare and insurance trends, provincial drug programs and new technology in Canada. We especially appreciated a sneak peek of Symbility’s new app, which we’ll be able to brand as ‘Lewer’ and roll-out to our clients in 2017.” (169)
Lewer staff recently attended the annual health fair at Lewer headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri.
According to the health fair organizer, Sue Steiner, the fair drew a large turnout. “This was the fourth year St. Luke’s Hospital came to our site to provide the screenings. We had a number of new associates participate.”
In addition to learning where they rank on the “health meter,” participants gained eligibility to participate in Lewer’s 2017 Health Savings Account (HSA) benefit. (155)
Lewer Financial Advisors attended the National Coalition of Associations of 7-Eleven Franchises (NCASEF) annual board meeting, October 23 – 26, 2016 in South Carolina. Lewer is an affiliate member of the NCASEF.
At the meeting, Senior Vice President Greg Addison appreciated building upon the relationships LFA began establishing at the national meeting in October 2015. Approximately 150 members attended the 2016 meeting in South Carolina.
At this year’s annual meeting, Addison participated in breakout sessions. “Lewer Financial Advisors continues to build relationships with members of the NCASEF and we are looking forward to assisting the association by providing financial services and information in the coming year.” (145)
Executive staff and members of the LewerMark team met with Sirius International at Lewer headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri, October 21 – 23, 2016. The teams met to further develop processes following the signing of an agreement with the London-based carrier last summer. Sirius International Insurance Corporation replaced Lewer’s previous carrier (Trustmark), effective June 1, 2016.
The relationship with Sirius, initiated by President Mike Lewer in 2015, was prompted by challenges presented by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Lewer’s interest in developing an exempt student insurance plan designed specifically for LewerMark schools.
An executive team from Sirius first visited Lewer headquarters in September 2015. In January 2016, Mike Lewer traveled to Sirius International’s offices in London, with senior vice presidents Mike Dlugolecki and Robert Stompoly to finalize the new partnership.
“It’s particularly gratifying to observe how these two organizations – one based in London, England and the other based in the middle of the United States – have come together over a period of one year to create and implement a program so effectively designed for LewerMark clients,” said Lewer. “It’s apparent to all of us at Lewer that we’ve found the right partner.” (140)
The 2016 regional NAFSA: Association of International Educators conferences were held in October and November at locations across the country.
LewerMark Regional Sales Director Laura Caferro kicked off the season at the Region I Conference in Anchorage, Alaska. According to Caferro, there were 200 participants from Region I. “There was a great turnout of NAFSAns, many current clients,” she commented after the conference.
Caferro said she felt fortunate to have the opportunity to co-present with International Student Advisor Lisa Jacobson from Cascadia College in Washington. “Our session was Crisis Management 101: First Steps to Creating a Plan,” said Caferro. “Lisa and I made a great team and received positive feedback on the presentation.”
LewerMark provided a Smoked Salmon & Alaskan Tote door prize, which was won by Andrea Pietryzk from Lewis & Clark College in Oregon. Caferro presented the prize to Pietryzk at the Annual Gala where, she said, everyone attending from Region I “had a lot of fun raising funds for travel grants.”
LewerMark has been associated with NAFSA for nearly two decades. The team attended a total of eight regional conferences this fall, including the Region IV conference in Springfield, Missouri, the Region V conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Region II conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the Region XII conference in Palm Springs, California.
